Fitness Education Series Targets Youth
and Community Programs
Interested
in learning how to improve your health, fitness, sports specific
training and performance? Then we just may have a program for you.
The SportsMedicine & Science
Institute Fitness Education Series is working to
provide widespread access to programs for health departments,
central school districts and fitness facilities across the United
States. The first of this series includes the following:
Optimization of Classical Ballet and Sports
Development Programs
Presenter:
Stephen M.
Apatow, Director of Research and Development, Sports
Medicine & Science Institute.
Classical
ballet training
(CBT) is considered to be the most advanced technical movement
mechanics
training in the world, providing a foundation for the development of
joint
strength, postural alignment and precision control of the human frame
in
space. Utilizing the science of CBT as a reference point, we find
the
tools needed for a healthy lifestyle and performance optimization in
sports (including football,
baseball, basketball, equestrian, golf, gymnastics, hockey, martial
arts, running, soccer, downhill and cross country skiing, wrestling) as well as how postural
alignment corresponds with the mechanism of joint stress and
injury.
The subject matter in this program was first introduced in 1999
at
the National Conference for the Society of State Directors of Health,
Physical
Education, and Recreation (73rd
Annual Meeting Program) for U.S. Board of Education offices and
health educators representing all 50 states and was formally presented
as the International Sports Science Association (ISSA) accredited course
"Optimization
of Classical Ballet and Sports Development Programs" at the at
the 11 state American Alliance for Health, Physical Education,
Recreation
and Dance (AAHPERD) Combined Convention on February 12, 2003 in
Reno-Sparks,
Nevada.
